A CORRELATION STUDY BETWEEN RECEPTIVE VOCABULARY MASTERY AND READING ABILITY OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF MAN SITUBONDO IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2004 - 2005

In teaching and learning English, there are four language skills, include reading. Reading skill has received as a greater emphasis than the other skills and every one agree. The development of reading is one of the important outcomes of education. While the support the four language skill, it can be developed with language components, includes vocabulary. Vocabulary can be divided by productive and receptive vocabulary. In this research, the writer just concerns with receptive vocabulary. In fact, a student said ÃâSometimes, I do not understand what IÃâm reading because the words are too hard, I do not know what the writer meansÃâ. For that reason the writer want to know whether there is or not correlation between receptive vocabulary. The problem in this research is Ãâis there correlation between receptive vocabulary and reading ability of the second year students of MAN Situbondo in the academic year 2004-2005?Ãâ
The objective this research is to know whether there is or not correlation between receptive vocabulary mastery and reading ability of the second year students of MAN Situbondo in the academic year 2004 Ãâ 2005. The area of this research is MAN Situbondo. Considering the respondents is determined by using Cluster Random Sampling by lottery. From four classes, the writer takes one class (47 students) as a sample. The method of Colleting Data is test. The test consists of two groups; they are test for receptive vocabulary and test for reading ability. Both test are consisted by 40 items test, 20 items test for each variable. Both test are in the form of multiple Ãâ choice test.
The writer computes and analyzes the data by using Ãâproduct moment correlationÃâ formula. She finds that the result of computation is 0,60. While, the critical value of product moment table is 0,291 for N = 46 students. There found, coefficient correlation is higher than the value of r Ãâ table. It means that the alternative hypothesis as accepted, that is ÃâThere is correlation between receptive vocabulary mastery and reading ability of the second year students of MAN Situbondo in the academic year 2004 Ãâ 2005Ãâ.
Finally, some recommendation is offered to English teachers in Indonesia to encourage the students to improve their receptive vocabulary and reading ability and improve the teaching method. Secondly, students of MAN should realize that vocabulary and to be familiar with dictionary. Third, further researcher who are interested in conducting the same research are recommended to find more adequate source of data. Fourth, the English Department that should provide the college students with some competence in teaching reading and vocabulary
