Ringkasan
Temuan untuk ambiguitas leksikal menghasilkan tiga macam, yakni literal meaning and figurative meaning, literal meaning or idiomatic meaning, dan ambiguous homonyms. Temuan untuk ambiguitas sintaksis menghasilkan lima macam, yakni appositive or object, one modifier with a coordinate head, one head with a coordinate modifier, ambiguous relative pronoun dan ambiguous relative clause.
Ringkasan Alternatif
This research entitled “Ambiguous Zeugmatic Constructions in Margaret AtwoodÂ’s Four Short Stories: A Study of Syntax and Semantics” discusses semantic ambiguity involving zeugmatic constructions ‒ structure consisting of one part of speech (most often the main verb, but sometimes a noun) governs two or more other parts of a sentence (often in a series) ‒ whose data source are taken from four short stories by Margaret Atwood. Adapting theories from Burton (2007), Miller (2002), Quirk and et al (1985), Benner (2006), Lyons (1977) and Kreidler (1998), this research is expected to provide not only conceptual understanding as well as aspects related to zeugma but also, as an addition to the previous studies, attempts to examine the ambiguity by analyzing the meanings which are encoded in the zeugma. The method used for this research is analytic descriptive. Of all the 13 data analyzed, this research results in two kinds of findings, i.e. syntactic findings and semantic findings. The syntactic findings show that the syntactic features encoded in zeugmatic constructions comprise noun and verb acting as the governing word and coordination of words and phrases acting as the words governed. The findings also semantically ambiguous: lexically and syntactically. The lexical ambiguity results in three kinds, i.e. literal meaning and figurative meaning, literal meaning or idiomatic meaning, and ambiguous homonyms. The syntactic ambiguity results in five kinds, i.e, appositive or object, one modifier with a coordinate head, one head with a coordinate modifier, ambiguous relative pronoun and ambiguous relative clause.
