This final project entitled "An Analysis of Cohesion in Selected Nine Students' Essays of The Second Grade Students of English Department of POLBAN"�. The purpose to conduct this research is to know the types of grammatical cohesive devices found in the students essay writings. The problem could be identified; probably not all the students' essay writings contain the good and appropriate cohesive devices so their writings are quite difficult to be understood. The scope of this final project is analyzing the grammatical cohesive devices. The object of the research is nine students' essay writings taken from the second grade students of English Department POLBAN. The essays are classified into three category based on GPA range. The result showed that reference words and conjunction became the most grammatical cohesive device used. The average result from students' essay category one (students with high GPA) was 21,01%, students' essay category two (students with standard GPA)19,5%, and students' essay category three (students with low GPA) 16,58%. In other words, these second grade students of English Department POLBAN generally mastered reference and conjunction as the grammatical cohesive device that they applied in their writing. However, they did not use ellipsis and only few number of substitution used. Therefore, it is advisable for them to master ellipsis and substitution too by learning process.
