This current study entitled An Analysis of Cohesive Devices Used in the Opinion Articles on the Jakarta Post Newspaper deals with grammatical cohesion which consists of reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. Ten opinion articles with total 7,486 words are the object under investigation. This study focuses on the outer layer of grammatical cohesion to find out the most frequently used types of grammatical cohesive devices found in opinion articles and how they are used. The method used to analyze the data is qualitative method. The data are collected in the form of print-out and e-paper and analyzed by using the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). The result shows that the most frequently used grammatical cohesive devices in opinion articles in the Jakarta Post newspaper is reference (77.00%), followed by conjunction (22.56%), and the least frequently used is substitution (0.27%) and ellipsis (0.27%). Moreover, types of reference which are found in the articles are personal reference (217 items/ 75.35%), demonstrative reference (68 items/ 23.61%) and comparative reference (3 items/ 1.04%). Then, type of substitution which is found is just verbal substitution (1 item) and ellipsis which is just one type also appears one item. For conjunction, types which are found are additive conjunction (18 items/ 21.43%), adversative conjunction (33 items/ 39.29%), clausal conjunction (18 items/ 21.43%), and temporal conjunction (15 items/ 17.85%). The present study is useful to see how cohesive devices are used in very well-constructed writings.
