An Analysis of Collocations Translation Used in Enid Blyton's Novel "Five on a Treasure Island"

This project is about an analysis of lexical collocations translation in the novel written by Enid Blyton, Five on a Treasure Island. Translating collocations is not an easy task for translators and EFL as every language has its own rule of expressing collocations and this causes some collocations in the ST are mistranslated into the TT. Hence, the aims of this final project are to find out lexical collocations found in the novel Five on a Treasure Island, to show the strategies of translation used in the novel, and to determine the level of accuracy and acceptability of the translated collocations in the novel. To analyse the lexical collocations and their translation, the qualitative method was applied and the theories by Benson, Benson, and Ilson (1986), Baker (1992), and Nababan, Nuraeni, and Sumardiono (2012) were employed. The finding of the analysis showed from 113 lexical collocations found, the most frequently lexical collocations were (verb + noun) 60%, while the least lexical collocations were (verb + verb) 2%. In addition, the most used translation strategy was using a collocation of similar meaning but dissimilar form, i.e. 43 lexical collocations (38%). The average score of the accuracy and acceptability for the translated lexical collocations was 2.7 which meant they were transferred accurately and acceptably. Over all, the translation of lexical collocations in the novel was good, yet it still needed improvement. The comparison between the translation strategies used and translation quality was equivalent.
