This study entitled An Analysis of the Figurative Language and Tone used in Ten Short Stories of Cool n Smart Magazine aimed at analyzing the types of figurative language frequently used and finding the tone in ten short stories of Cool n Smart Magazine of 2009 and 2010 editions. The qualitative and quantitative approach were performed to examine the meaning of the types of figurative language as well as the quantity of figurative language found in ten stories. After analyzing stories, the result demonstrated that the types of figurative languages found were hyperbole, alliteration and metonymy. While the tone of stories found are compassionate and affectionate. Therefore, the readers are able to describe the author's purpose by concerning the use of figurative and tone of the whole stories to make the story more interesting and lively.
