This study entitled "An Analysis of the Translation Method in Five Categories of Texts; descriptive, news, tips, letter, and instruction". This project is done since some of translators may not pay attention to the translation method in translating the texts. Whereas, Newmark said there are specific translation methods used in each category of the texts. So, this research is aimed to identify the translation methods in each category of text and to find out the most common method of translation in each category. The objects of the study were taken from magazines, manual books, and letters which are written in bilingual language; English and Indonesia. The texts were categorized into informative and vocative text. Those texts were analyzed by using translation method of Newmark's theory, which has eight translation methods; word for word, literal, faithful, semantic, communicative, idiomatic, free translation, and adaptation. The result of this study showed that communicative method is the most common method in each category of the texts. Newmark said that for informative and vocative text use communicative method; while expressive text uses semantic method. It can be seen that the result of analysis with the theory of Newmark is appropriate. Key words: informative, vocative, Newmark's translation method.
