This study was to analyseze the characteristics of travel writing used in the travel article in National Geographic magazine. The aims of this study are to identify the characteristics of travel writing used in the articles of National geographic magazine and to give readers more knowledge about the travel articles focusing on the used characteristics of travel writing. This research used qualitative research method because the data is largely in non-numerical form. The National Geographic magazine was the object of this study. The result of this study shows that the travel articles in National Geographic magazine are good travel writing because each article uses all the six characteristics of travel writing. And, there are two characteristics typically used in the articles in National Geographic magazine: the writer's personal experiences and vivid reporting. Through these two characteristics, the authors can convey the story to the readers clearly. Keywords: characteristics, travel writing, travel articles, qualitative, National Geographic magazines.
