An Analysis of Types of Sentences Used in Food Advertisements in Better Homes and Gardens Magazine

This study analyzed types of sentences in 20 food advertisements taken from Better Homes and Gardens magazines to find kinds of sentences used in the advertisements. The strengths and weaknesses of the literature reviews were also analyzed in order to get the gaps. Better Homes and Garden magazines were used in this project since the magazines are in English and contain many food advertisements using the various sentences. This project mostly employed a qualitative method to analyze each sentence used in each food advertisement, and a quantitative method to count the types of sentences from food advertisements in terms of frequency and percentage with simple calculation. The data collections were conducted by reading the magazines, collecting the data, selecting the data, marking the advertisement, scanning the advertisement to complete the appendix. The data was analyzed by identifying the advertisements, analyzing types of sentences, and recording the analysis results in a table. The findings showed that types of sentences used in 20 food advertisements are simple sentences (70%), complex sentence (16%), compound sentences (14%), and no compound-complex sentences are found. It indicates that the simple sentences are mostly used in food advertisements, that is 42 sentences. There are also 9 complex sentences and 5 compound sentences used in the advertisements. This can be interpreted that the most use of simple sentences in food advertisements make the readers easy to understand the message.
