The title of this final project is Analyzing Translation Techniques of Idiomatic Expressions in the Iron Man film. The aims of this project are to find out the types of idiomatic expressions in the Iron Man film and to find out the translation techniques used in translating the idiomatic expressions in the movie. The method that is used in conducting this research is qualitative research. The length of this film is 126 minutes and consists of 130 idiomatic expressions. In analyzing the idiomatic expressions, the theory proposed by Fernando (1996) is used to categorize the idiom. Based on the theory, three types of idioms can be found in the film. They are pure idiom (25%), semi idiom (23%) and literal idiom (51%). The theories proposed by Baker (1992) and Molina & Albir (2002) are used in analyzing the translation techniques of the idiomatic expressions. The result of the analysis shows that translation by paraphrase is the most dominant techniques both in the subtitle from original CD by Marvel (77,6%) and a website called subscene.com (82,2%) . Based on the research it can be concluded that the translators mostly used translation by paraphrase in translating the idiomatic expressions and they rarely used idiom equivalent from the target language to transfer the meaning of the idioms.
