Writing plays an important role in the context of teaching English as foreign language. In this research, the students have difficulty in writing a short paragraph in terms of developing and organizing their ideas, using appropriate vocabulary and mastering tenses. Based on the problem above, it was important to overcome the student problems, so that the students writing ability could be improve. And Stick Figures are suitable strategy in teaching writing.
In this research, the problems are ÃâHow can the use of Stick Figures improve the eight grade studentsÃâ writing recount ability at MTsN Arjasa Jember in the 2014/2015 academic year?Ãâ And the purposes this research is to improve the eight grade studentsÃâ writing recount ability by using Stick Figures. The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is VIII E that consists of 23 students. In this research, the primary data were collected from the writing test and observation field notes during the teaching learning process. The aspects of scoring writing test are grammar, vocabulary, mechanics and organization. This research was conducted in two cycles by following the procedures of the action research: preliminary study, planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The results of writing test were analyzed by using formula E=n/N x 100%.
Stick figures improve the studentsÃâ writing recount ability in two cycles from the percentage of the students who got score ≥70 (E=60%) in Cycle 1 to (E=82%) in cycle 2. The observer made notes about the activities during teaching and learning process. The observer analyzed how effective the implementation of the action. From the result, it was showed that the use of stick figures as learning media could improve the studentsÃâ writing recount ability.
Based on the data above, it showed that there is improvement of the students writing. It means that the result could reach the criteria success was 70%. It is concluded that the use of stick figures can improve the eight grade studentsÃâ writing recount ability at MTsN Arjasa Jember in 2014/2015 academic year by some steps which are explaining about the use simple past tense and appropriate mechanic in constructing a good paragraph, giving example of a good paragraph, asking them to comprehend the actions in the stick figures, asking them to answer some questions related to the stick figures and combining the answers into a good recount paragraph, and discussing the result of writing practice together.
