Smitt explain (1980:06) reading is an active attempt, on the part of the reader, to understand a writerÃâs message. The reader interacts with, and tries to reconstruct, what a writer wishes to communicate. Reading comprehension is defined as the level of understanding of a text/message. This understanding comes from the interaction between the words that are written and how they trigger knowledge outside the text/message. Think-aloud is a research method in which readers report their thoughts while reading, thereby researchers will be able to achieve a better view of the mental processes in which readers are engaged. Reading in a foreign language needs considerable efforts on the readers' part due to understanding of a text. This method helps the teachers to collect unseen processes such as inference or the use of prior knowledge by learner.
The problem of this research is ÃâHow can the implementation of think aloud improve the VIII grade studentsÃâ reading comprehension at SMP Islam Al-Hidayah Mangli-Jember In the 2014-2015 Academic Years? The research objective is intended to know how think aloud can improve the VIII grade studentsÃâ reading comprehension at SMP Islam Al-Hidayah Mangli-Jember In the 2014-2015 Academic Years. The design of this research is Classroom Action Research. The research subject is VIII students at SMP Islam Al-Hidayah Mangli-Jember in the 2014/2015academic year which consists of 26 students.
The result of score analysis, the percentage of students who got score ≥ 65 in cycle one was 57.69% and in cycle two was 76.92%. Besides, the result of the observation checklist in cycle I was 51.92% students active in the class and in cycle II was 76.89% students active in the class. Based on the research result, there was gradual improvement from the first cycle to second cycle.
Based on the results in both cycles, it can be concluded that the implementation of think aloud strategy can improve the eighth grade studentsÃâ reading comprehension at SMP Al- Hidayah Mangli-Jember in the 2014-2015 academic years.
