Reading is one of the communication skills that need to be developed and mastered by the students. Reading has a great function of English mastery. Reading comprehension skill is the basic skill in learning English, because every activity in English class involves reading. there are two reasons for reading. they are reading for getting information and reading for pleasure. It means that, by reading, we do not only get information or knowledge about something important, but also one of the keys to gain knowledge. To face this common problem there must be some ways and solutions to improve the studentsÃâ reading comprehension through the available teaching technique, in this case the researcher used context clues to improve reading comprehension. In this research, the problem is ÃâHow can the use of context clues improve the eighthA grade students reading comprehension at SMPN Sumber Wringin in the 2010/2011? Ãâ.
The design of this research is classroom action research. The research subject is eighthA class which is consist 30 students and to obtain the research data used test and abservation. To calculate the students reading comprehension score, the researcher uses this formula:
The result of the score analysis, the percentage of students ( was 53.33 %) in the first cycle to( was 76.66%). Beside that, 36.68% were active in the class in cycle one and 71.66% were active in the class in cycle two. Therefore, it can be concluded that context clues is very effective to be applied in increasing the studentsÃâ reading comprehension.
