The objectives of this research are to find out whether English Newspaper is able to improve studentsÂ’ reading ability and to find out what happens to the class situation if English newspaper is used to impove studentsÂ’ reading ability. The design of the research is classroom action research with cycle model. The subject of the research are VIII-B students of SMPN 1 Curahdami Bondowoso that consist of 21 students, in the second semester of 2013/2014 academic year. The research target is 70% students get score at least 65 and 70% students actively involved in the teaching and learning reading abiity using English Newspaper. The actions in cycle covered 1) planning of the action, 2) implementation of the action, 3) observation of the action and 4) reflection. In the planning section, lesson plans for each meeting are constructed with the English teacher. In the implementation section, the lesson plans are applied in the classroom. Then the observation section is done during the teaching and learning process. Finally, the reflection section are done after conducting the teaching and learning reading ability using English newspaper. The result of this research are as follows. 13 students or 61,90% of the 21 students who get score at least 65. In the cycle 2, the result of studentsÂ’ mean score in reading ability test are 69. The score improved from cycle 1 that is 62 to 69 in cycle 2. There are 16 students or 76,19% who get score at least 65. Besides that, having known how to use English newspaper well students were more motivated and felt more comfortable in joining the reading class. They were more active because they interacted. Based on the result above. The researcher could interpret that students had been able to comprehend the passage. Finally, the researcher concluded that English newspaper could be used to improve studentsÂ’ reading ability at SMPN 1 Curahdami Bondowoso in the 2013/2014 academic year.
