Skripsi ini berjudul Off Record Directive Illocutionary Act In Khaled Hosseini's Novel A Thousand Splendid Suns, membahas secara komprehensif tentang jenis ujaran directif yang diucapkan oleh penutur dengan strategi kesopanan yang lebih spesifik, yaitu strategi off-record. Untuk menganalisa data tersebut, digunakan beberapa teori; teori sentence moods menurut Eggins dan Slade (1997), dan teori kesopanan oleh Brown dan Levinson (1987). Metode penilitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif analitik, di mana penelitian dilakukan dengan menentukan jenis ilokusi direktif dari ujaran terlebih dahulu berdasarkan hubungan dan fungsi ujaran, kemudian menguraikan strategy kesopanan offrecord yang digunakan oleh pembicara. Jumlah data yang dianalisis sebanyak 12 data, data tersebut merepresentasikan strategi yang digunakan oleh penutur dan diklasifikasikan berdasarkan tipe. Dalam temuan penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa off record directive illocutionary act bisa muncul dalam dua jenis directif; tindak ilokusi direktif ditemukan dalam jenis kalimat indicative, sedangkan tindak ilokusi tidak langsung ditemukan dalam jenis kalimat elliptical imperative. Selain pemilihan jenis tindak ilokusi direktif, penutur juga menggunakan beberapa strategi off record untuk menghindari atau mengurangi melakukan facethreatening act kepada pendengar sehingga tujuan dari ujaran penutur bisa tercapai. Strategi tersebut adalah give hints, give association clues, use rhetorical question, overstate, and be incomplete.

This research is entitled ÃâOff Record Directive Illocutionary Act in Khaled HosseiniÃâs Novel A Thousand Splendid SunsÃâ. It discusses the directive utterances uttered by speakers, specifically to comprehensively describe the types of directive illocutionary act as an off record strategy. To analyze the data, this study uses several theories: theory of moods by Eggins and Slade (1997), and the politeness theory by Brown and Levinson (1987). The research method used is descriptive analytics, and the research is done by determining the type of the directive illocutionary act based on the relationship between the type of mood and the function of the utterance. Then, it describes the specific off record strategy used by the speaker. The total of data analyzed are 12 data, the data are classified according to type of directive and specified to off record politeness strategy. In the findings of this study, it was found that the off record directive illocutionary act may appear in two type; direct directive is found in elliptical imperative and indirect directive is formed in indicative mood. Besides determining the type of directive, the speaker also uses specific off record politeness strategy to avoid or less do face-threatening act to the hearer. The specific off record strategies found are give hints, give association clues, use rhetorical question, overstate, and be incomplete.
