Sebagai makluk sosial, komunikasi merupakan kebutuhan yang sangat penting. Dengan perkembangan media komunikasi yaitu teknologi telepon sangat membantu terwujudnya hubungan komunikasi, terutama komunikasi jarak jauh. Namun yang sering terjadi yaitu penyalahgunaan media komunikasi khususnya telepon genggam dimana pengguna membaca Short Message Service (SMS) dan Instant Messenger di saat yang tidak tepat seperti ketika mengendarai kendaraan bermotor. Aktivitas membaca SMS dan Instant Messenger seperti ini merupakan hal yang berbahaya karena dapat mengurangi konsentrasi pengguna ketika sedang berkendara. Aplikasi Pembaca Pesan Short Message Service (SMS) dan Instant Messenger berbasis Text To Speech adalah solusi yang ditawarkan untuk mempermudah pembacaan pesan dengan cara mengubah data teks SMS dan Instant Messenger ke bentuk suara menggunakan Google Text-to-speech dengan default Bahasa Indonesia yang berjalan pada platform Android. Pengubahan dari teks ke suara dilakukan agar pengguna dapat mengetahui isi pesan SMS dan Instant Messenger tanpa harus bersentuhan fisik dengan telepon genggamnya. Fitur pengubah kata singkatan juga tersedia pada Aplikasi Pembaca Pesan Short Message Service (SMS) dan Instant Messenger. Proses pengubahan kata singkatan dilakukan dengan membandingkan setiap kata pada isi pesan dengan kata pada kamus singkatan menggunakan regular expression (regex). Hasil pengujian menggunakan kuesioner penelitian menunjukkan Aplikasi Pembaca Pesan Short Message Service (SMS) dan Instant Messenger berbasis Text to Speech berkategori baik dengan nilai 79,35%.

As social beings, communication is a very important requirement. With the development of communication media are extremely helpful phone technology establishment of communication links, especially long-distance communication. Misuse of communication media, especially mobile phones, which often happens is reading Short Message Service (SMS) and Instant Messenger at times that are not appropriate, such as when driving a motor vehicle. The activity of reading SMS and Instant Messenger like this is dangerous because it can reduce the concentration of the user so that it allows the user to experience an accident. An Application of Message Reader Short Message Service (SMS) and Instant Messenger based Text To Speech is the solution offered to simplify message reading by changing SMS text data and Instant Messenger to voice forms using Google Text-to-speech with the default Indonesian language running on the Android platform. Changes from text to voice are done so that users can find out the contents of SMS and Instant Messenger messages without having to physically contact their mobile phones so as to minimize the possibility of loss of user concentration. The abbreviation word change feature is also available on the SMS Reader and Instant Messenger Application. The process of changing the abbreviation is done by comparing each word in the message content with the word in the abbreviation dictionary using regular expression (regex). The results of beta testing using a research questionnaire showed Short Message Service (SMS) and Instant Messenger Application based on Text To Speech in good category with a value of 79.35% of therespondents were satisfied with the application abilities to read and translate SMS text .
