Telah dilakukan penelitian tentang pengolahan batu padas menjadi katalis basa untuk proses transesterifikasi minyak nyamplung. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui konsentrasi optimum aktivator batu padas, karakteristik batu padas teraktivasi basa, kondisi operasi optimum proses transesterifikasi minyak nyamplung dengan batu padas sebagai katalis dan karakteristik biodiesel hasil transesterifikasi minyak nyamplung. Untuk mencapai tujuan tersebut, maka dilakukan analisis luas permukaan batu padas secara BET (Brunaur, Emmet and Teller) serta dikaji pengaruh variasi konsentrasi aktivator NaOH dan KOH (0,5 N, 1 N, 1,5 N, 2 N), variasi suhu (50℃, 55℃, 60℃, 65℃), variasi jumlah katalis batu padas (1,5%, 2,5%, 3,5%) dan variasi waktu reaksi (2 jam, 3 jam, 4 jam, 5 jam) terhadap yield dan bilangan ester biodiesel yang dihasilkan dari transesterifikasi minyak nyamplung. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan luas permukaan batu padas teraktivasi basa NaOH 2 N sebesar 10,3080 m2/g. Pada suhu 60℃, jumlah katalis 2,5%, waktu reaksi selama 4 jam menggunakan katalis batu padas teraktivasi NaOH 2 N menghasilkan yield biodiesel maksimal sebesar 78,86% dan bilangan ester tertinggi sebesar 23,81 mg-KOH/g. The Effect of Catalyst from Padas Stone Activated by NaOH and KOH for Nyamplung Oil (Calophyllum Inophyllum Linn) Transesterification Process The effect of catalyst from padas stone which has been activated by NaOH and KOH for nyamplung oil transesterification process has been studied. The purpose of this study was to find out the maximum activator concentration for padas stone, the characteristic of padas stone activated by base, the optimum process condition for nyamplung oil transesterification using padas stone catalyst and the characteristic of biodiesel from nyamplung oil transesterification process. The characterization of catalyst was carried out by BET (Brunaur, Emmet and Teller) method to determine the surface area, also the effect of NaOH and KOH activator concentration variation (0,5 N, 1 N, 1,5 N, 2 N), temperature variation (50℃, 55℃, 60℃, 65℃), padas stone catalyst concentration variation (1,5%, 2,5%, 3,5%) and time of process variation (2 hour, 3 hour, 4 hour, 5 hour) to the yield and ester number of biodiesel produced from nyamplung oil transesterification process. The result showed, the surface area of padas stone catalyst activated by NaOH 2N is 10,3080 m2/g. At 60℃, the concentration of 2,5% padas stone catalyst activated by NaOH 2 N and 4 hour of process resulted in a maximum biodiesel yield of 78,86% and maximum ester number of 23,81 mg-KOH/g.
