Motor induksitigafasaadalahalat yang mengubah energi listrik menjadi energi mekanik yang berupa putaran. Penggunaan motor induksi tiga fasa untuk aplikasi di mesin-mesin industri telah banyak digunakan pada dunia industri karena mempunyai kontruksi yang sederhana sehingga mudah dalam perawatannya. Namun demikian pengasutan motor induksi secara langsung seringkali menyebabkan arus starting yang besar. Hal ini membuat berkembangnya berbagai metode pengasutan konvensional menggunakan kontaktor dan rele untuk mengurangi arus asut. Sistem pengasutan dengan pengaturan tahanan luar pada rotor adalah salah satu cara sistem pengasutan yang mampu mengurangi arus starting motor induksi tiga fasa jenis rotor lilit.
