The students should master English well, because they have English lesson at Junior and Senior High school. Recently, the English becomes an elective subject that is taught to Elementary School. But in fact, when the teachers teach English to students, many of them complain about the difficulties to understand a reading text. This problem happens because the students have lack vocabulary.
Based on the background of this thesis, the research to find the answer of the general problem ÃâIs there significant correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension achievement of the tenth year students of MAN Jember 1 in the academic year 2010/2011Ãâ
This thesis uses the correlation research design. The sample of this research is selected by using cluster sampling. The data is analyzed by using product moment formula.
In conducting the research, the data are processed to know the result. They are collected by applying the test. The result of computation is consulted to r-table value, to know whether the result is significant or not. Finally, it is found that the general conclusion is there is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension achievement, the result of statistical value is 0, 61 and the value of r-table with N = 35 is 0,334 at level of significant 5%. Obviously, r- statistical ≥ r-table is significant.
Based on the result of research data analysis and the level of significance 5% it can be concluded that the conclusion, Ãâthere is a positive correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension achievement of the tenth year students of MAN Jember 1 in the academic year 2010/2011Ãâ is accepted and the null hypothesis is rejected.
Finally some of recommendations are given primarily to the English teacher can apply an appropriately good teaching technique to help the students in developing their reading comprehension. It is important to get success in teaching learning process and to gain better vocabulary mastery for the students of junior high school. Secondly, the students should take more exercises and practices through reading and learn vocabulary more. Thirdly, it is better for the other researcher to be more careful in conducting a research especially vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension achievement in order that they will get a concrete conclusion from their research.
