Skripsi ini berjudul âÃâ¬ÃÅThe Element of Gothic Presented in Setting and Characterization in Two Edgar Alan Poe Short Stories âÃâ¬ÃÅThe Fall of the House of Usher" and âÃâ¬ÃÅThe Tell Tale HeartâÃâ¬Ã�. Dalam penelitian ini penulis memilih cerpen karya Edgar Allan Poe, alasannya dalam cerpen tersebut unsur gothic dimunculkan melalui unsur latar dan karakterisasi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi unsur gothic dalam cerpen tersebut.
Dalam penelitian ini penulis menggunakan metode deskriptif analisis sebagai dasar nntuk menganalisis cerpen tersebut. Dengan metode ini penulis bisa mengidentifikasi dan menggambarkan analisis teori structural dan mengungkap unsur âÃâ¬Ãâunsur intrinsik seperti latar dan karakterisasi.
Dari hasil penelitian ini penulis menemukan unsur-unsur gothic yang dimunculkan dalam latar dan karakterisasi dan pendekatan strukturalism digunakan untuk mengungkap unsur-unsur intrinsik tersebut. penelitian ini memenuhi dua indikator yaitu:latar atmosper dan tempat, sementara dalam karakterisasi adalah: penampilan fisik dan penggambaran pemikiran. Setelah analisis penulis terhadap data tersebut maka, dapat disimpulkan bahwa unsur-unsur gothic sengaja dimunculkan untuk membuat perasaan pembaca masuk kedalamnya.

The short stories illustrated the elements of gothic unmistakably and dominantly, especially in the way they were presented in setting and characterization. Generally, the aim of the study is to identify how the elements of gothic were presented.
The method applied in the study is analytic descriptive. By using this method, the data were identified, described, and analyzed. Structuralism approach is used to reveal the intrinsic elements involving setting and characterization.
In this research, the elements of gothic appeared through setting and characterization. In setting, there are atmosphere and background. In characterization, there are physical appearance and portrayal of thought. Shortly, the researcher concludes that gothic is the great literary work that makes the sense of the readerâÃâ¬Ãâ¢s mind.
