Reading as one of the four language skills becomes the central of teaching and learning process. Without reading capability, the student cannot getting much information from the text especially in English text sources. Actually, a technique becomes important aspect in reading. Without mastering the technique, the reader cannot reach the maximal ability in reading. One of the common technique is called skimming. This title is taken because the teacher in SMP especially in the second year students do not giving yet this technique. Based on the briefly background of the thesis above, the research is taken. This research is conducted to know the comprehending of the student in reading when they are using skimming technique not reading ordinary. On the other hand, this research is conducted to know whether there is significant influence of using skimming technique on the reading comprehension of second year student of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Wuluhan-Jember in the academic year 2005-2006. This thesis uses quasi experimental design. The subject divided into two group they are experimental group and control group. The population is used because the subject are less than one hundred students. The test item that made for pre test and post test are 32 items. Based on the computation, the result of the t- test is 7.094. Usually it is called by t-observation. Suitable with the t-table it shows that the result of t test is higher than the value of t table that is 2.00 form df 79 (df= 38+43-2=79 with significant level 5%). Finally, from the result, show that there is significant the influence of using skimming technique on the reading comprehension of second year student of SMP Muhammadiyah 06 Wuluhan-Jember in the academic year 2005-2006. After knowing that the result is able to prove there are any some suggestion for the English teacher. They suggested to develop the teaching reading with literal and inferential comprehension by using skimming technique able to make the student do not bore in teaching learning process. Suggestion for the student are they have to able to practice the skimming technique more because it is useful technique if it used in limited period. Suggestion also purposed for the other researcher who are interested in conducting the same problem are recommended are hoped to find more adequate sources data.
