Penelitian berjudul THE REPRESENTATION OF GENERAL ELECTIONS COMMISSIONS (KPU) IN THE JAKARTA POST DURING THE 2009 OPEN CAMPAIGN PERIOD (A Study of Critical Discourse Analysis) dilakukan berdasarkan asumsi bahwa The Jakarta Post cenderung menampilkan KPU dengan cara yang kurang layak yang dalam hal ini boleh dikatakan sebagai pijakan penelitian ini. Selanjutnya, data yang terkumpul adalah kalimat-kalimat yang diambil dari artikel-artikel The Jakarta Post yang diterbitkan selama masa kampanye terbuka 2009 yang berjumlah lima puluh delapan (58) dari dua puluh enam (26) artikel, dua puluh lima (25) data menunjukkan representasi negatif yang dalam hal ini sebagai bukti kebenaran dari kecurigaan tersebut yang nantinya menjadi fokus analisis dalam penelitian ini, sebelas (11) data menunjukkan representasi yang positif, dan dua puluh dua (22) mununjukkan representasi yang netral. Untuk mengakomodasi analisi data, metode analisis deskriptif digunakan dengan menerapkan teori strategi wacana Theo Van Leeuwen sebagai teori utama dan teori Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) sebagai teori pendukung. Sebagai hasilnya, ditemukan bahwa The Jakarta Post menggunakan beberapa strategi, diantaranya Differentiation - Indifferentiation, Objectivation - Abstraction, Nomination - Categorization, Nomination - Identification, and Association – Dissociation. Sebagai tambahan, strategi tersebut dipresentasikan melalui karakteristik sintaksis, seperti clause (Transitivity), clauses complex (Parataxis and Hypotaxis). Dengan menganalisis karakteristik sintaksis tersebut, di level clause, representasi dapat ditemukan dengan menganalisis pemilihan kata, sedangkan di level clause complex, representasi dapat ditemukan dengan menganalisis hubungan antara dua atau lebih klausa. Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa KPU telah ditampilkan sebagai institusi yang tidak punya komitmen dalam bekerja. Selain itu, programprogramnya tidak berjalan dengan baik. Selanjutnya, KPU juga direpresentasikan sebagai institusi yang tidak kompeten dalam bekerja, tidak punya kepekaan terhadap masalah sehingga banyak masalah yang belum terselesaikan. Selain itu, KPU juga direpresentasikan sebgai institusi yang tidak punya kekuatan.

The research entitled THE REPRESENTATION OF GENERAL ELECTIONS COMMISSIONS (KPU) IN THE JAKARTA POST DURING THE 2009 OPEN CAMPAIGN PERIOD (A Study of Critical Discourse Analysis) is conducted based on an assumption that The Jakarta Post tends to depict the General Elections Commissions (KPU) in an unfavourable manner that in this case is the starting point of this research. Next, the data collected are sentences taken from the articles in The Jakarta Post issued during the 2009 open campaign period. They are numbered fifty eight (58) from twenty six (26) articles, twenty five (25) data tends to show the negative representation that in this case is the proof of the suspicion and also the focus of the analysis of this research, eleven (11) shows the positive representation, and twenty two (22) shows the neutral representation. To accommodate the analysis of the data, the analytic descriptive method is used by employing the theory of Theo Van Leeuwen’s strategies of discourse as the grand theory and Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) as the supporting theory. As a result, it has been found that The Jakarta Post uses some strategies, such as Differentiation - Indifferentiation, Objectivation - Abstraction, Nomination - Categorization, Nomination -Identification, and Association – Dissociation. Additionally, those strategies are presented through the syntactical features, such as clause (Transitivity), clauses complex (Parataxis and Hypotaxis). Examining the syntactical features, in the level of clause, the representation can be found by analyzing the diction, while in the level of clause complex, the representation can be found by analyzing the relationship between two or more clauses. Therefore, it can be concluded that KPU has been depicted by The Jakarta Post as the institution that did not commit to its work. Besides, it was the institution whose program was incomplete. Next, KPU is also represented as the institution that was incompetent and was not qualified for working, had no sensitivity or carelessness in the problem then there were some problems unresolved appeared. Additionally, the institution that had no power was also the representation of KPU.
