Film Gothic merupakan fiksi Gothic yang diadaptasi dari literatur sastra Gothic yang berkembang sejak abad ke-17 hingga abad ke-18. Sebagai sebuah genre, film Gothic merupakan perpaduan antara fiksi, horor dan drama dengan latar abad pertengahan. Sleepy Hollow (1999) merupakan film gothic arahan Tim Burton yang di adaptasi dari cerpen Gothic dengan judul the Legends of Sleepy Hollow. Menceritakan tentang seorang inspektur polisi bernama Ichabod Crane yang ditugaskan untuk menangani kasus pembunuhan berantai di desa Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane awalnya tidak mempercayai kabar bahwa pelaku pembunuhan merupakan sosok makhluk tanpa kepala sampai akhirnya bertemu secara langsung. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan elemen - elemen visual Gothic yang terdapat dalam film Sleepy Hollow (1999), sebagai salah satu film yang diadaptasi dari cerpen Gothic. Adapun metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dan bersifat deskriptif dengan teknik pencarian data dengan metode studi pustaka dengan film Sleepy Hollow (1999) sebagai salah satu sumber data utama. Data yang terkumpul kemudian akan dianalisis berdasarkan teori Tatanan Penandaan Roland Barthes. Sumber data sekunder diperoleh melalui studi pustaka yang berasal dari media cetak, elektronik dan daring yang dianggap relevan dengan permasalahan. Hasil pembahasan menunjukkan bahwa film Sleepy Hollow (1999) memiliki visualisasi khas film Gothic sebagaimana layaknya sebuah film Gothic.

Gothic fiction movie is adapted from the Gothic literature that developed since the 17th century until the 18th century. As a genre, Gothic movie is a blend of fiction, horror and drama with a medieval setting. Sleepy Hollow (1999) movie is a gothic movie in the direction of Tim Burton adaptation of the Gothic short story titled The Legends of Sleepy Hollow. Told about a police inspector named Ichabod Crane who is assigned to handle the case of serial murder in the village of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane initially did not believe the news that the murder is a creature without a head until finally meet in person. The purpose of this study was to describe the Gothic visual elements contained in the Sleepy Hollow (1999) movie, as one of the film adapted from a Gothic short story. The research method used is descriptive and qualitative methods. The technique of collecting data by the method of literature with the film Sleepy Hollow (1999) as one of the main data source. The collected data is then analyzed based on the theory of Signification Order by Roland Barthes. Sources of secondary data obtained through library derived from print, electronic and online were considered relevant with the problem. Discussion of the results showed that Sleepy Hollow (1999) movie has a typical visualization of a Gothic movie as movie of Gothic.
