This event concept is generally held as the platform to raise the awareness of youth regarding environmental issue. Muara Gembong is an area of coastal ecosystem that is prone to abrasion. Initially, there were mangrove plantations that broke waves from the sea hence the area was less prone to abrasion. However the trees had been cut down to expand the brackish water pond area, and as a result, the amount of fishes that used mangrove roots as their nest decrease along with the deforestation and abrasion often occurs. Moreover, the area is the habitat of “Lutung Jawa” and Collared Kingfisher that are in the verge of extinction. The increasing deforestation decreases the mangrove forest area which serves as the habitat of the endangered species. Due to the decreasing amount of mangroves, the level of sea water rises and water seeps into the houses. In addition, the supply of drinkable water from the filtration of sea water through mangrove roots is threatened.
There is a movement driven by a group of people who is aware of the importance of this matter. The movement is called Save Mugo, which stands for Save Muara Gembong. Therefore, participants are encouraged to join the movement by participating in PUMUN Social Project which aims to contribute in mangrove reforestation of Muara Gembong through plantation and cultivation. The participant will gain the knowledge of how to plant mangroves and increase the awareness of environmental issues while also giving significant impacts towards the mangrove reforestation of Muara Gembong to promote environmental sustainability.
